Map#

Wake has a live map at the helm and a track map for every finished voyage. It shows where you are, the line you have sailed and a marker for each logged event, with sea marks drawn over Apple’s base map. It shipped as Phase 4 and was confirmed on the water.

How to use it#

  1. On the Helm tab, switch from “Log” to “Map”. You see your position as a dot, the voyage track as a line and a marker for each event.

  2. Pan and zoom freely. The map frames the whole track once and then leaves the camera to you.

  3. Open a finished voyage from the Voyages tab. Under the stat card is a small map with the track and markers.

  4. Tap “Expand map” for the full-screen view. Switch “Standard” or “Satellite” at the top right, tap “Center on current position” to find yourself, or “Fit whole track” to see the whole voyage again.

  5. Tap a marker to see the event name and time, then its position. Where several markers sit close together they merge into a numbered badge. Tap the badge to spread them out, and tap anywhere else on the map to fold them back.

  6. If the signal drops, a “Map offline” chip appears in the top left. Just keep logging; it clears by itself when tiles load again.

What happens behind the scenes#

  • With at least two track points, the camera frames the whole track. With fewer, it follows your position. This framing happens once, so it does not fight you while you pan. The map stays loaded when you switch between “Log” and “Map”.

  • There is one marker per event, styled by kind. Events saved without a position are left off the map.

  • OpenSeaMap sea marks come from tiles.openseamap.org and are drawn over Apple’s base map. The corner of the map reads “© OpenSeaMap / OpenStreetMap contributors”.

  • Tiles you have viewed are kept on the phone, with no size limit, so they can show again without signal. iOS may empty that folder when space runs low.

  • The live track at the helm is drawn in cyan with a soft glow. Finished voyages draw theirs in bright green.

  • Logging never depends on the map. The log buttons are untouched by it, a UI test checks this, and the airplane-mode test on the water passed.

Known limits#

  • The saved tiles are not a dependable offline chart. Do not rely on them for navigation without signal.

  • Without signal, a “Map offline” chip appears and clears when the connection returns. The track and markers stay, but Apple’s base map may go grey.

  • A voyage with fewer than two track points has no track map. The preview says “No track recorded for this voyage” and “Logged with fewer than 2 GPS fixes”.

  • Sea marks appear only where OpenSeaMap has data, and only once you zoom in to a moderate level. Most open water has none.

  • The owner confirmed all 5 on-water checks (live position, airplane mode, framing the track, the history preview and full screen, and the attribution placement) after the 2026 sailing season, reported on 2026-10-09.
